“Oh, Varanasi and Ujjain, cities of ancient lore, Where the sacred rivers Ganges and Kshipra flow, Your ghats are a sight to behold, A tapestry of culture, history, and the untold” Varanasi and Ujjain, two ancient cities on the banks of the Ganges and Kshipra rivers, respectively, are renowned for their iconic riverfront spaces, or ghats. These ghats are steeped in history, culture, and religious significance. They serve as a place of spiritual solace for millions of pilgrims, as well as a vibrant hub for social, cultural, and economic activities. Varanasi, the city rises from the western bank of the river Ganga, where the river takes a broad crescent sweep towards north. Along the Ganges there are 84 bathing ghats, reaching from Assi Ghat to Adi Keshava in the north. The relationship between the sacred river and the city is the essence of Varanasi. Ujjain, one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism, located on the eastern banks of the Kshipra River is deemed to be an agglomeration of history, traditional beliefs, myths and legends. This research project aims to reimagine these iconic riverfront spaces as vibrant cultural, recreational, and economic hubs, while preserving their cultural significance, developing sustainable urban spaces, and promoting tourism and culture by identifying the cultural significance of riverfronts in the context of ghats. It will then examine the current state of the ghats in Varanasi and Ujjain and identify the challenges and opportunities for their redevelopment. Drawing on best practices from around the world, the paper will develop recommendations and a framework for the redevelopment of the ghats. These recommendations will be guided by the principles of preservation and development of these ghats.
