Analysis of Water Quality of Yamuna River: From Yamunotri to Its Confluence in the Ganges

Yamuna, the second largest tributary of The Ganges is becoming polluted due to lot of anthropogenic activities across all the five states of its flow. The situation is most dire in Delhi, the capital of India. The irreversible loss caused to the river is becoming a threat to the lives of human beings and aquatic organisms, which perhaps is not being realized by the responsible citizens of India living at the banks of the river and by the businesspersons discharging their industrial waste in the pious river. Yamuna, covering a total length of 1,376 km across five states of India encounters all types of human-made activities, destroying its preeminence and religiousness. 29 recognized sampling stations have been selected for evaluating the water quality in terms of pH, total coliform, dissolved oxygen, and biological oxygen demand, the standards set by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) of India. Along the entire stretch, except in Himachal Pradesh (HP) and partially in Uttarakhand (UK), the situation is getting worsened day by day in other three states, viz. Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh (UP) and it worrisome that 72% sampling stations are carrying much higher quantity of total coliform than the allowed limit. The problem demands a serious concern for addressing increasing levels of pollution in Yamuna, and suitable measures need to be worked out, which can help making Yamuna a ‘lifeline’ to its dependents in real sense.
