Ambedkar’s persuasion to move to the city reflects an immense optimism he had in urban spaces as a potential site of Dalit emancipation where the community could begin a life that held the promise to attain an aspired future bereft of indignities and denied opportunities. It is complex to ascertain the extent of emancipation achieved by the community and how emancipatory urban space is. However, the engagement, participation, and negotiations of Dalits in urban reveal with certitude that the quest for emancipation is an ongoing struggle to overcome the historically imposed disadvantages, dispossession, and immobilities.
