High voltage engineering is an important course in the domain of Electrical Engineering, which gives understanding to undergraduates about how high voltage is generated and measured and how HV equipment are tested. Normally, most of the academic institutes do not establish high voltage lab due to economic constraints. Tremendous growth in power sector technology has given a golden opportunity for engineers to protect the high power equipment for reliable operation during their lifetime. The fabrication and installation of a high voltage equipment in the system is much costlier; thus, the life of the equipment shall be more. For the student to understand the real function of these, a scale down model must be set up by which students can visualize and understand the real high voltage engineering concepts at a laboratory level. The main intention of this paper is to make a student, get familiar with the HV equipment in a real HV environment, to measure the voltage breakdown strength and electric field intensity (EFI) of an insulating material. This demonstration can create an interest to students toward high voltage engineering. A HV equipment is subjected to instantaneous switching voltage and abnormal ambient conditions, such as temperature, pressure, and humidity which progressively lead to insulation degradation.
