Hong Kong, renowned as an international financial centre and the Pearl of the Orient, has one of the world's best medical conditions. However, its healthcare system still faces challenges exacerbated by workforce shortage due to its growing and ageing population. Information exchange is inefficient in Hong Kong due to compartments between public and private healthcare systems, which cause excessive burdens on both patients and healthcare staff such as redundant diagnoses and tests. The Hong Kong government introduced the eHealth Record Sharing System (eHRSS) and its predecessor, the Patient Privacy Information—eHealth Record as solutions to improve the sharing of patient information between public and private sectors. Since its implementation, eHRSS has achieved great success by softening the public–private healthcare division and enhancing efficient healthcare delivery. The system has benefited both doctors and patients. Physicians experienced easier access to patient records, improved continuity of care, and smoother health services, whereas patients took advantage of fewer redundant assessments and better access to medical recommendations. Despite these advantages, challenges, like increased workloads for doctors and barriers to patient enrollment, remain to be solved. Future improvements are urged to enhance system interoperability and optimise patient access to healthcare services.
