Microvascular Decompression for Trigeminal Neuralgia Secondary to Vertebrobasilar Dolichoectasia

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) due to vasculonervous conflict is a common chronic pain disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of electric shock-like or stabbing pain affecting the dermatomal distribution of trigeminal nerve [1–3]. This condition is almost always unilateral [4]; it manifests more commonly on the left side and within the territories of the maxillary (V2) and mandibular (V3) branches of the trigeminal nerve [5]. The incidence of TN is higher in women and increases with age [6]. The mostly implicated blood vessels responsible for compression of the trigeminal root are the superior cerebellar artery, in about 75% of cases, the anterior inferior cerebellar artery, in 10%, or a vein, in 7% [1, 7]. Less commonly, TN may be secondary to vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia (VBD).
