Imperatives of Application of Lean Principles in Construction: A Review

There are many changes happened in the Indian construction sector that are having an impact on the country's economy, both directly and indirectly. Therefore, there is an urgent requirement of management strategy that can manage such growing number of changes and meet with desired quality/production aspect. One of the alternate techniques, known as lean construction (LC), helps to increase productivity while using fewer people, less time, and fewer failed building projects. A detailed literature review of the topic of Lean had been considered within the time frame 1992–2022. The papers are selected from Science Direct, Scopus, and Google Scholar with the Keyword “Lean tools, Lean Construction”. The study filter 52 articles out of 110 based on their indexing, citations, and from the top 10 rated journals. The study follows a qualitative mode of research. The paper also includes an analysis of different Lean Tools and their benefits in the construction sector. After proper literature the study concluded that only few Lean tools are used and among this the most commonly used are Last Planner System, Target Value Design and Lean Manufacturing Method. Most of the articles are from UK, USA. There is only a single article from India in the selected papers.
