However, during the preterm period, continuous HVS appears in active sleep (AS), which is labeled the “3” pattern in the EEG code. The EEG observed during deep sleep after infancy can be considered a developmental form of the HVS pattern (i.e., “5”) seen in term infants. The components of the HVS pattern are essentially the same as those of the burst part of the “7” pattern.
