While only two decades, the scale and pace of changes in Period Five (2000–2020) significantly diminished the city’s food bowl. Sydney’s population grew from four to five million—adding the combined populations of the Australian cities Canberra, Hobart, Darwin, Cairns and Bendigo. More homes were built than at any time in Sydney’s history. The 2018 Metropolitan Strategy proposed to add more new dwellings in the following 20 years than were built, for instance, in Adelaide since it was founded in 1836. It is therefore perhaps unsurprising that Greater Sydney was one of the top 10 fastest-growing regions in the Western world. Remaining agricultural lands were subsumed in a frenzy of urban expansion accompanied by a lack of effective policy, legislation or practice measures to halt metropolitan agriculture’s evisceration.

摘要
