Semantics is to do with linguistic meaning (Saeed 2015: 168–169). Some linguists make a distinction between lexical meaning (to do with words) and sentence meaning, and thereby conflate the study of lexis into the field of semantics. That is not the approach taken here. While there are certain areas in lexis and semantics that overlap, e.g. lexical/semantic fields, for the purpose of language play they need to be distinguished.
