This chapter takes us into the village and reflects on the lessons learned by the author and his team over the last 10 years in rural Hebian and other 2 villages. It presents their action-research programmes to diversify the local economy by establishing guesthouses to generate tourist and visitor income flows, alongside changes in agricultural practices—a developmentalist's poverty experiment—if using the author's own terminology. Some detailed examples of the ways in which life has changed, and often improved, and challenges have been dealt with locally, are presented: from villagers setting up coffee shops to others producing walnut oil.
