The work of fighting poverty never truly ends. Perhaps we will one day reach utopia, but until then, there will always be work to carry out. This is because—to continue from the conclusions of the previous chapter—ending poverty must address both the absolute and the relative dimensions of poverty. Even absolute poverty, we should remind ourselves, is in a way ‘relative’, exemplified by the fact that the absolute poverty line can shift over time to reflect changes to living standards and purchasing power.
