Electrochemical processes for removing pathogenic organisms from water and wastewater have gained significant attention due to their high efficiency and ease of application in real-world scenarios. Various approaches can be employed to achieve pollutant removal, utilizing different materials for the electrodes. There are several techniques which are predominantly used for disinfection such as ozone disinfection, chlorine disinfection, bromine disinfection, UV light disinfection, peroxone (ozone/hydrogen peroxide) disinfection and electrochemical disinfection. Chlorination and chlorine-based technique is the most widely used for killing microorganisms in water within the portable water industry but due to several drawbacks including exposure risk from storage, production and transportation of this poisonous gas. Therefore, the development of new disinfection techniques has become a focus of research. Electrochemical disinfection, or electro disinfection (ED), has emerged as a valuable alternative to chlorination. The ED technique is robust, cost-effective, more potential and environment friendly technique. However, only a limited number of electro disinfection (ED) products are currently available in the market. This is due to the relative unfamiliarity of the technology and the intense competition with other disinfection methods. Nevertheless, the cost and performance advantages of ED are expected to lead to its broader adoption in the future.
