Damask Rose: A Symbol of Sustainability and Resilience in Morocco’s Bioeconomy

The Damask rose (Rosa damascena Mill.), a prominent element of Morocco’s agricultural landscape, plays a pivotal role in the emerging sustainable bioeconomy of the nation’s oases. This chapter further explores the multifaceted impact of Damask rose cultivation on economic diversification, rural livelihoods, and environmental sustainability in Morocco. In addition to its cultural importance, the Damask rose industry stimulates eco-tourism, generates income, and empowers local communities through the implementation of sustainable agricultural practices. These practices, which align with circular bioeconomic principles, enhance crop quality and yield while bolstering farmers’ resilience to market fluctuations and promoting social inclusion. This chapter examines the symbiotic relationship between Damask rose cultivation and Morocco’s pursuit of a thriving bioeconomy. It highlights the necessity of integrating sustainable practices into national bioeconomic strategies to enhance climate change resilience and socioeconomic development. The chapter employs the Moroccan experience as a case study to advocate for a holistic approach that prioritizes the interconnectedness of biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and socioeconomic empowerment within a sustainable and equitable bioeconomy. Moreover, the chapter presents a comprehensive analysis of sustainable Damask rose cultivation practices tailored to Morocco’s distinctive climatic conditions. This includes an examination of propagation techniques, fertilization methods, and cultural management strategies. This analysis offers practical guidance for other countries in the Global South seeking to advance sustainable agricultural development within their unique contexts.
