The chapter explains the multifaceted historical processes through which different identities have been formed in Pakistan which are likely to influence the public discourse. Given that we are using the psychoanalytical concept of identification, with emphasis on the populist dichotomous structuring of “the people” versus “the anti-people” the chapter has been divided into two sections. The first section introduces the variety of ways politicians and state actors have articulated “the people” followed by a section describing the way Pakistanis define their identities. The next section focuses on the historical description of anti-people both within and outside Pakistan followed by the description of how our respondents talked about these “anti-people.”
