Exploring the Medicinal Potential of Muntingia calabura Linn. Fruit: A Comprehensive Overview
摘要
The only member of the genus Muntingia, Muntingia calabura, is a flowering plant in the Elaeocarpaceae family. This is a fast-growing fruit tree. This pioneer species is resistant to drought, alkaline and acidic soil, and harsh environmental conditions. The crimson fruits are commonly known as Jamaican cherries. The flowers are used to relieve cramps and spasms in the abdomen and as an antiseptic. It is effective in treating headaches and colds. The fruit extract from M. calabura L. was tested for its antibacterial properties against the gram-positive strains (S. aureus, S. epidermidis, and S. mutans) and gram-negative (C. violaceum and E. coli) bacteria that are relevant to human infections. The fruit extract exhibited notable antibacterial activity against the microorganisms under investigation. The fruits of Muntingia calabura are antioxidant-rich due to the presence of phytochemical compounds like phenolic, flavonoids, and tannins. The investigated methanolic Muntingia calabura fruit extract is a chemotherapeutic drug to stop the proliferation of cancerous cells, which proves to treat cancer cells. Consequently, it is evident from these pharmacological findings that M. calabura fruits and leaves have a historic folkloric use in the management of pain-inflammatory illnesses, which proves to be an anti-inflammatory agent too. Hence, these findings could help to identify the active ingredients in wild edible fruits by analyzing their antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxicity activities in more detail.
