Obesity in the UAE
摘要
Obesity is considered a global epidemic caused by a wide range of factors, such as genetic, epigenetic, physiological, iatrogenic, environmental, and sociocultural factors. Obesity has been acknowledged as a significant risk factor for various medical conditions in the UAE. The country has witnessed rapid urbanization and an increasing number of expatriate workforce, which has resulted in a modern, fast-paced, and technology-driven lifestyle. This has resulted in a notable decline in physical activity levels in various aspects of life, including occupation, domestic tasks, and leisure-time activities, in addition to increased consumption of unhealthy diets, including calorie-dense, processed, and pre-packaged food carrying poor nutritional benefits. The sedentary lifestyle prevalent in recent decades, especially in the Middle East region, has been identified as a contributing factor to the global increase in the prevalence of diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and obesity. Significant efforts have been made by the UAE government to prevent obesity in the community. It has implemented various strategies and plans aimed at preventing and detecting overweight and obesity.
