Nursing in the UAE: Reality and Future Directions
摘要
Nurses are at the heart of healthcare systems and form the backbone of healthcare globally. The nursing profession in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has evolved rapidly over the last few years, driven by the changing population profile and the need to deliver patient-centered care that improves people’s quality of life. This chapter discusses important milestones and innovations that have contributed to transforming the nursing profession in the UAE. Major challenges facing nursing practice, education, and research are addressed, including the nursing shortage (particularly of Emirati nurses), the lack of specialization in nursing, clear career paths, and unified registration and licensure requirements; limited postgraduate programs; and insufficient skills in research and evidence-based practice. This chapter also presents a set of recommendations to strengthen the nursing profession in the UAE, encourage policymakers and healthcare leaders to strengthen nurses’ role in shaping health policies, and motivate nurses to contribute to healthcare reform.
