The focus of this chapter is to establish the purpose of the book. It presents the challenges for health and healthcare arising from the increasingly complex context in which health and healthcare operate. It highlights the difference between cognition, action and leadership based in the principles of Complexity and Cartesian science. It promotes the re-imagining of health and healthcare as a holistic ecosystem that acknowledges three agencies of health and healthcare: Principles and Purposes (P1); People in Place (P2); and Practices and Processes (P3), and the importance of interconnections between these agencies. Each of the issues identified are discussed in more detail in the chapters in Part I.
