Castor (Ricinus communis L.) is a monospecific and a highly cross-pollinated crop belonging to the family Euphorbiaceae (2n = 20). It is a significant oilseed crop comprising of 45–55% oil and two unique fatty acids, ricinoleic acid and linoleic acid, which are utilized in industrial and pharmaceutical applications such as lubricants, medications, and laxatives. Seed production in castor faces difficulties due to the environmentally sensitive nature of sex expression in its parental lines. Therefore, there is a pressing requirement to increase agricultural productivity and accelerate hybrid seed production of castor in the face of adversity. Isolation, roguing, and a reliable source are all necessary for successful seed production. Effective management of seed quality is crucial throughout the entire seed production process, starting from field selection and extending through harvesting, processing, and storage. The production of hybrid seeds is influenced by both plant pollinators and environmental conditions. In castor, hybrids are created using a two-line system that includes female (pistillate) and male (monoecious or interspersed staminate flowers, ISF) lines. The hybrid seed production process consists of two key stages: the foundation seed production of both female and male lines, followed by certified hybrid seed production. Additionally, proper agronomic practices are vital for successful hybrid seed production. To fully realize the genetic potential of a variety, it is imperative to maintain its true-to-type status, as it was originally released for commercial cultivation. These are discussed in this chapter.
