Chemical exposure to the ocular surface is an emergency requiring prompt attention, as resultant damage to superficial ocular tissues, intraocular structures, and periocular adnexa can lead to permanent visual dysfunction. Rapid normalization of pH and prompt treatment can lead to recovery of the eye, while delay or mismanagement can lead to complications including corneal clouding and neovascularization, glaucoma or hypotony, eyelid malposition, cataract formation, or disfigurement. Advances in therapeutics, surgical techniques, and an algorithmic approach to post-chemical exposure can improve patient outcomes. We present cases of alkali and acidic injuries that demonstrate management techniques for such cases.
