This study explores the use of heart rate variability (HRV) and electrodermal activity (EDA) for emotion recognition in political and electoral behavior. Traditional models of political behaviour have often overlooked the role of emotions, focusing instead on rational and social factors. However, recent advances in political psychology highlight the significance of emotions in shaping political preferences and actions. Utilizing an experimental design with 38 university students, this study measured physiological and self-referential responses to political stimuli, including images and campaign videos of various political leaders. Results indicate that HRV and EDA are effective non-invasive measures for detecting emotional responses, with significant variations observed between stimuli associated with different political orientations. The findings suggest that right-wing political stimuli tend to elicit stronger sympathetic nervous system activation compared to left-wing stimuli. This research underscores the potential of integrating physiological measures with traditional political behavior models to enhance our understanding of voter behavior and improve the accuracy of electoral predictions.
