The Role of Cancel Culture in the Development of Digital Lynching of Influencers: The Case Study of Auron
摘要
In February 2023, Auron, a well-known Spanish streamer, was “canceled” via Twitter. This research aims to analyze how the cancellation culture influenced his digital lynching. A qualitative approach methodology was applied, using content analysis to analyze the effect of this controversy on the users who were part of the cancellation. The results showed that factions in favor, against, or neutral toward this cancellation coexisted during its development, each with arguments defending their position and the use of negative terms for those who disagreed with them. Furthermore, the effects of a cancellation ranged from the exposure of morally unacceptable behavior to permanent damage to the image of the canceled person. This leads to the conclusion that the decision to cancel or not to cancel someone depends on the ethical and moral perception of each individual.
