Soft Power and Vaccine Diplomacy: A Case of Covid-19 Pandemic

Covid 19 has brought the world to a standstill, and the world witnessed one of the most devastating events after the second world war, where the pandemic has claimed so many human lives. Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee has compared the devastation of the coronavirus with War. The reel life of movies has been transformed into reality. In its initial phase, the only means to deal with the virus was to keep a distance from the infected person, as shown in zombie movies and other preventive measures such as using masks and sanitisers. But the ultimate solution came in the form of a vaccine after a year. The vaccine manufacturing process started in different parts of the world, mostly in developed and a few developing countries. The article will highlight how the countries used vaccine diplomacy as a public diplomacy tool to enhance their image and reputation at the global level. One of the significant challenges that came to the equitable distribution of vaccines to mitigate the effects of the virus was in the form of vaccine nationalism. The paper will also focus on the role of vaccine diplomacy as a soft power asset in shaping the country’s foreign policy. Lastly, the article concludes that the nations should focus more on cooperation during such a world crisis by keeping their selfish national interests aside so that more and more human lives can be saved and nations should practice India's approach of ‘Vaccine Maitri’ then Vaccine nationalism and also highlights the role of soft power in global health governance.
