Drought and food security are interrelated. About 15.8% of India’s land area is arid, while about 37% is characterized by semi-arid climatic conditions. In order to preserve food security, agricultural drought monitoring is critical. Droughts have a significant impact on the agricultural sector which results in low productivity; less fertility etc. further drought has direct impact on water sources, land, and plant ecosystems. All these are key variables in agricultural sustainability and development. Drought season occurs practically every year in the study region, primarily during the months of March–June and October–December, which are known as the Pre and Post Monsoon periods respectively. This paper attempts to analyze the patterns of drought with the help of Vegetation Health Index (VHI). Land Surface Temperature (LST) and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) are used to calculate Vegetation health index (VHI). There are several classifications of Droughts based on VHI values, including extreme drought, severe drought, moderate drought, mild drought, and no drought. In order to analyze the pattern of agricultural drought in the study area the application of geospatial technique will be applied. Landsat data will be used to calculate Vegetation Health Index. On the basis of obtained indices the drought maps showing the trends of agricultural drought of Kathua district will be prepared.
