Circular Economy Approaches in Bioeconomy in the Global South

The intersection of the circular economy (CE) and bioeconomy represents a transformative approach to addressing sustainable development challenges, particularly in the Global South. This chapter highlights the synergies between CE and bioeconomy, highlighting their combined potential to foster resource efficiency, waste reduction, and sustainable growth. The bioeconomy is centered on the sustainable utilization of biological resources, while CE focuses on optimizing resource use through recycling, regeneration, and the minimization of waste. Together, these frameworks offer significant opportunities for addressing pressing environmental and socioeconomic issues, especially in regions such as Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, where resource scarcity, waste mismanagement, and socioeconomic disparities persist. Despite the potential benefits, the implementation of circular bioeconomy initiatives in the Global South faces numerous challenges, including economic constraints, limited technological infrastructure, and inadequate waste management systems. Additionally, social barriers and the lack of robust policy frameworks hinder the widespread adoption of CE principles. This chapter explores these barriers while presenting case studies of innovation hubs and startups leading the way in developing sustainable solutions. Technological advancements in biotechnology, waste-to-energy systems, and bioproduct innovations are also examined, demonstrating the role of innovation in driving the circular bioeconomy forward. The chapter further outlines the importance of policy and governance frameworks in promoting CE and bioeconomy integration. It emphasizes the role of governments, private sectors, and international organizations in facilitating the transition to sustainable systems through collaborative efforts, policy coherence, and investment in research and development. By integrating CE into bioeconomic strategies, the Global South can achieve environmental benefits, such as reduced emissions and enhanced biodiversity, and economic gains, including job creation and rural development. In conclusion, the chapter underscores the critical need for collaborative, multistakeholder efforts to scale up circular bioeconomy solutions in the Global South. Future research should focus on addressing existing barriers, fostering innovation, and developing comprehensive policy frameworks that promote sustainability and inclusivity.
