Physiological Evaluation of Color Schemes on Display Screens of Manned Submersibles Cockpit

The research aims to evaluate the influence of color schemes on the in-cabin display screens of manned submersibles concerning divers’ physiological states. By examining the physiological responses of pilots to specific color environments, the study aspires to generate scientific evidence for the design of submersible in-cabin displays, with intentions to optimize the pilot’s workspace, minimize physiological stress, and boost the safety and efficiency of diving operations. The study leverages multi-parameter physiological monitoring techniques, including the continuous measurement of pilots’ blood pressure, heart rate, heart rate variability, electroencephalogram (EEG), and cerebral blood flow via near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Experiments will be carried out under simulated conditions, exposing pilots to screens with diverse color combinations for set durations. Data collected during visual stimuli will be used to ascertain the impact of color schemes on pilots’ physiological indicators. The expected results will demonstrate the specific influences of various color combinations on pilots’ physiological parameters. For instance, certain colors may trigger increased blood pressure or heart rate, whilst others might foster enhanced heart rate variability, suggestive of a relaxed state. Alterations in EEG and cerebral blood flow will disclose the effects of different colors on brain activity and hemodynamics. This data will offer quantitative proof of the relationship between color schemes and divers’ physiological responses. The study postulates that targeted colors on displays can effectively lessen pilots’ mental load and psychological stress. The findings are expected to provide scientific guidance for the ergonomic design of in-cabin environments in submersibles, thus safeguarding the health and safety of pilots.
