Crop Mapping and Monitoring Using Sentinel-2: A Review

Implementing Sentinel-2 remote sensing technology for crop mapping and monitoring has significantly benefited the local farmers. This research study explored the potential of Sentinel-2 imagery to improve farming techniques. Particularly, it identified the key factors contributing to Sentinel-2’s effectiveness for crop mapping and monitoring of lands. The study also investigated the advantages of using the Sentinel-2 and other remote sensing technology for monitoring and mapping lands, including the impact of remote sensing technology on agricultural sustainability. This research conducted a comprehensive literature review using three online databases, focusing on articles published between 2018 and 2024 about crop mapping and monitoring using Sentinel-2. A specific inclusion and exclusion method was applied from over a thousand sighted articles from three database search engines, resulting in a final selection of 29 relevant articles. The results revealed the effectiveness of Sentinel-2 in crop mapping and monitoring, with contributions from various classification methods. The combined GEDI data improves the identification of crops that the Sentinel-2 excels in. The impact on agricultural sustainability is expected as it suggests the potential transformation of farming will enhance food security. This study indicated that Sentinel-2 will revolutionize the traditional farming method, leading to increased crop yields. In addition, it can inform policies and regulations, improving agricultural and environmental governance. Hence, Sentinel-2 has the potential to improve agriculture and broader societal and environmental contexts significantly.
