Diversity, Cultural Bonding and Social Resilience
摘要
Diversity is a part of our everyday human landscape as it impacts almost all aspects of our existence. In contemporary times, it is impossible to come across a monolith social setup consequent upon globalisation and modernisation. Due to the large-scale movement of people from one region to another and one nation to another, no culture can boast of its exclusiveness. This intermingling of people with different customs, traditions, ideology and day-to-day practices have led to social transformations. India is no exception; over the ages, it has evolved into a culturally, racially, linguistically and religiously diverse society. What binds people is the shared traditions, culture and values. People have been an integral part of each other’s lives and participated in their rituals and celebrations. However, diversity does pose challenges; every group has their aspirations, and this becomes a ground for contestation. In such an eventuality, it is the cultural bonding that enables us to overcome those social challenges and maintain harmony. A peaceful and resilient society is possible only when it can come on a common platform and accommodate and respect each other’s differences. The inability to do so leads to fissures in the social fabric of society, often resulting in violence. A socially resilient society effectively copes with the challenges posed regularly due to social, political and environmental changes.
