A state of disconnection from the natural environment is frighteningly dangerous and an ultimate threat to the sustainability of the natural environment and the ecosystems. Moreover, it may cause the destruction of the planet itself (Nisbet et al., Environ. Dev. 41:715–740, 2009). The purpose of this paper is to investigate how nature exposure together with consideration of future consequences (CFC) fosters environmentally responsible behaviour through the mediation of nature relatedness among natural site visitors. The study followed a correlational design and the data were collected from the visitors (N = 312) of both aquatic (beach & lakes) and green environments (parks & gardens) located in Pondicherry, the Union Territory of India. The simple mediation analysis output revealed that nature relatedness could mediate the effects of independent variables on dependent variable. The finding of the present study implies the need for providing environmental education to increase the CFC with respect to the natural environment as it has been evident from the present study that consideration of future consequences along with nature exposure is capable enough to bring about differences in nature relatedness which in turn result in the enhancement of ERB. The attempt to verify the application of the norm activation model to explain the role of nature exposure and consideration of future consequences in fostering environmentally responsible behaviour through the mediation of nature relatedness is the novel contribution of this paper.
