This work focuses on discrete-time realization of fractional-order proportional integral (FOPI) controller for a class of first-order plus time delay (FOPTD) plant. The designing has been accomplished in three stages. The initial stage involves designing of the fractional-order controller in \(s\) -domain through an analytical method considering frequency domain design criteria. In the next stage, FOPI controller has been approximated in \(s\) -domain using Oustaloup method. At the final stage, Al-Alaoui approximation method has been employed to discretize the FOPI controller. The efficacy of the controller realization method has been examined by analyzing the frequency responses of the approximated system through simulation results.
