The Country Without a Post Office (1997), Agha Shahid Ali’s sixth volume of poetry, focuses on the deplorable condition of the conflict-ridden Kashmir of the 1990s and the poet’s lament at this violent turn of history. The book consists of 28 poems, and in all of them “Kashmir became a vortex of images circling around a single point of stillness: the idea of death” (Ghosh 210). The narrative of the loss of paradise constitutes their main motif. The title of the volume is evocative of an actual happening in Kashmir when post offices were shut down, and there was no communication between Kashmir and the outside world. For several months, no letters were delivered, and as a result, there were heaps of undelivered letters. The metaphor of letters and post offices appears in many poems of this volume, where lost letters symbolize disruptions in the social fabric.
