Mayoz Vassanji was born in Kenya on May 30, 1950, to Gulamhussein Vassanji and Daulatkhanu Nanji, who had emigrated from India to Africa during the second wave of migration, which started around 1920. After losing his father at five, he moved to Tanzania with the family and grew up there. He went for studies to Nairobi, where he won a scholarship to the MIT in the USA. Later, at the University of Pennsylvania, he did his PhD in Nuclear Physics. After that, he emigrated to Canada and worked as a research associate in the University of Toronto from 1980 to 1989.
