The word “trans” refers to “beyond” or “across,” and “nationalism” refers to “identification with one’s nation and its interests” (Vertovec 2009). Transnationalism aims to create and sustain a unified national identity, drawing upon a combination of shared social characteristics, including culture, ethnicity, geographic location, language, politics, religion, traditions, and a belief in a common history. It seeks to foster national unity and solidarity and all kinds of processes that move beyond the boundaries of the nation-states. This promotes the growth of multidisciplinary perspectives, which, in turn, help in undertaking studies on communities and their politics, issues related to trade and capital flows, families, migrations, citizenship, identities, and public spaces and cultures.
