Biculturalism
摘要
Biculturalism is the integration or identification of an individual with two cultures: the heritage culture (the culture one has grown up in) or ethnic culture and the receiving culture (the culture in which one is trying to settle or has settled). Biculturalism is common among immigrants, refugees, sojourners (international students and expatriates), indigenous people, ethnic minorities, and mixed-ethnic individuals (Berry 2006; Padilla 2006). Such people must deal with two issues: (a) the extent to which they are motivated or allowed to retain identification and involvement with their culture of origin and (b) the extent to which they are motivated or allowed to identify with and participate in the mainstream, dominant culture. Biculturalism is a part of the experience of people who have settled in a new country and their children who are born and grow up in it. However, their upbringing is also influenced by their heritage culture, close-knit communities, friendships, and spoken languages.
