Scots Beneath the Banyan Tree: Stories from Bengal by Bashabi Fraser
摘要
Scots Beneath the Banyan Tree: Stories from Bengal (2012) is a unique collaborative project on a highly underexplored chapter of Indian Scottish exchange. Featuring well-researched prose texts by Bashabi Fraser, the researcher, and editor of the volume and translator of the Bengali lyrics by the scroll painter Gurupada Chitrakar, the book attempts a biographical delineation of the lives of eight Scotsmen whose work made a lasting impact on the society of Bengal. Each of these prose narratives is accompanied by a scroll painting, which, following the Patua tradition of art, is accompanied by a lyric that supplements the painting as the past unfolds frame by frame.
