Born on January 24, 1923, in Madras, Santha Rama Rau was the daughter of Benegal Rama Rau, a diplomat, and Dhanvanthi Rama Rau, a champion of women’s reproductive rights, and the first president of the Family Planning Association of India. She moved to England at the age of six when her father went to London to attend the First Round Table Conference in 1930. After her education at St. Paul’s School, she moved with the family to South Africa in 1938, where her father was appointed the High Commissioner of India. Her early education in England exposed her to diverse global experiences, interrupted only for 2 years during World War II. The academic and creative excellence of the Wellesley College in the USA induced in her a cosmopolitan outlook. But her Indian roots stayed with her, and these are reflected in her work on India, its people, their customs, and their culture.
