Pleasure City (1982), published in the USA as Shalimar, is Kamala Markandaya’s tenth novel. It echoes Markandaya’s Coffer Dams and serves as a counterpoint to her Possession (1963). Thus, in an altered landscape, the erstwhile colonizers interact with the post-colonial natives, to intensify the historical, political, cultural, and psychological complexities of their contact.
