My Mother’s Scribe: Poems and Tales by Rafiq Kathwari
摘要
My Mother’s Scribe: Poems and Tales by Rafiq Kathwari was published by Yoda Press in 2020. As the subtitle suggests, the genre is impossible to define within a single label as poetry, prose, memoir, documentary, and biography freely intertwine in the volume. The main storyline underlying all the texts is the destiny of Kathwari’s mother, Maryam. Although a personal and private story, it simultaneously stands for and generally symbolizes many similar family histories of the 1950s in India, Pakistan, and Kashmir. Being native to Kashmir, Kathwari assembles a mosaic of pieces from everyday life in his mother country and abroad. The title derives from the narrator and speaker of the poems, a young boy who serves as an official scribe to his mother.
