Mohabir, Rajiv (1981–)

Born in 1981 in London, England, to Guyanese parents, Mohabir describes himself as a “queer immigrant of color” who grew up in New York City and the Greater Orlando Area in Florida, USA. His lineage involved serving as indentured laborers in the sugar plantations in British Guyana. He pursued his graduation from the University of Florida in Religious Studies and later attended an MSEd in TESOL from Long Island University, Brooklyn. He also enrolled for a master’s in fine arts in poetry and literary translation from Queens College, City University of New York. In 2012, he worked as a public school teacher and also produced the nationally broadcast radio show “KaviHouse” on the channel JusPunjabi in New York. He received his doctorate in English from the University of Hawaii and briefly worked as an Assistant Professor of Poetry in the Department of English at the University of Colorado.
