Sake Dean Mahomet was a Bengali traveler, surgeon, and entrepreneur. His original Indian name was Sheikh Deen Mohammed, which later transformed into Sake Dean Mahomet and Sake Dean Mohamed in European pronunciation. Dean Mahomet was born in 1759 to a Bengali family in Patna, India. His father, a Subedar (sergeant), served in the East India Company (EIC) army. At 11, Dean Mahomet’s life took a significant turn when he met Captain Godfrey Evan Baker, a member of a notable Southern Irish family from Cork, who worked for EIC in India. In 1771, Dean Mahomet joined the East India Company army as a “camp follower” with the help of Mr. Baker and developed a lasting friendship with him. Dean Mahomet was promoted to the position of Jemadar, and in 1782, following a campaign-related dispute, Baker was forced to resign, leading him to return to Ireland. At that time, Dean Mahomet made a life-changing decision to resign from his position and accompany Baker on his journey to Europe. Baker and Dean Mahomet sailed from Calcutta in January 1784, and after arriving in the Irish port of Cork, Dean Mahomet began living with the Baker family. He was sent to a school to improve his English. While attending school, he met and married a girl named Jane Daly. Mr. Baker passed away unexpectedly in 1786. However, Dean Mahomet continued to live there with his wife.
