Lowland, The, by Jhumpa Lahiri
摘要
The Lowland (2013) is Jhumpa Lahiri’s second novel. It was shortlisted for the 2013 Man Booker Prize and awarded the 2014 DSC Prize for South Asian Literature. It deals with the life of Subash, a Bengali academic in America, whose life comes to a crossroads when his younger brother Udayan, a communist revolutionary during the Naxalbari uprisings of the 1960s, is shot dead by the police in Calcutta. Subash returns from America, where he had gone to pursue his PhD in Rhode Island; marries his pregnant sister-in-law, Gauri; and takes her to America. The novel then shows the gradual estrangement of Gauri from both her child (with Udayan) Bela and her brother-in-law (and now, husband) Subash. Later, she abandons them both to pursue her academic career in California.
