Born into a family of writers, Aruni Kashyap is one of the most outstanding contemporary voices among Indian writers in English. His work focuses primarily on insurgency, violence, and political conflict in Assam, a northeastern state in India. Born and raised in Guwahati, Assam, India, Kashyap’s work is simultaneously regional, national, and transnational in scope and theme as he addresses issues such as racism, homophobia, and immigrant experiences. A bilingual author, editor, and translator, Kashyap’s works include The House with a Thousand Stories (2013), His Father’s Disease: Stories (2019), How to Tell the Story of an Insurgency (2020), There Is No Good Time for Bad News (2021), and others written in Assamese and in English. According to Amit Baishya in World Literature Today, “The publication of the 2013 novel The House with a Thousand Stories announced the arrival of Aruni Kashyap as a new voice in the burgeoning oeuvre of anglophone fiction from northeast India.” He has received several awards, including the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, the Faculty Research Grants in the Humanities and Arts Program, the Arts Lab Faculty Fellowship, and the Charles Wallace India Trust Scholarship for Creative Writing. His work is inspired by a wide range of writers such as Indira Goswami, Amitav Ghosh, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Toni Morrison, Arundhati Roy, William Faulkner, and Nadine Gordimer, each shaping his writing in content and style.
