Thereafter, she went to Pennsylvania State University to pursue an MFA in Creative writing in 1984. She now permanently resides in Tempe, Arizona. It was in the USA that Appachana found her creative voice, as she began to publish her fiction, which brought her wide acclaim as one of the most important voices of Indian diasporic writing.
