Anjana Appachana was born in Coorg, Karnataka, India, and received education from prestigious Indian institutions like Scindia Kanya Vidyalaya in Gwalior, the University of Delhi, and Jawaharlal Nehru University. Thereafter, she went to Pennsylvania State University to pursue an MFA in Creative writing in 1984. She now permanently resides in Tempe, Arizona. It was in the USA that Appachana found her creative voice, as she began to publish her fiction, which brought her wide acclaim as one of the most important voices of Indian diasporic writing.
