Sonora Jha is a novelist, essayist, and professor of journalism at Seattle University, USA. She was born in India and pursued her undergraduate degree in commerce at Narsee Monjee College, Bombay University, in 1988. She received a postgraduate degree in social communications media in 1989 from Sophia Polytechnic, Mumbai. After working as a journalist covering crime, politics, and culture in India, Jha moved to Singapore and then to the United States. She was awarded a PhD in Media and Public Affairs from Louisiana State University in 2003. Jha was 18 when her first essay was published in the Times of India. She claims to be inspired by writers as diverse as Enid Blyton, Vikram Seth, and Zadie Smith. She teaches fiction and essay writing for Hugo House, Hedgebrook Writers’ Retreat, and Seattle Public Library. Currently, she teaches journalism and mass communication courses at Seattle University; advises the campus newspaper, The Spectator; and directs a study abroad, leading students to study journalism and mass media in India.
