Originally used in a botanical and zoological context to refer to the intermingling of species, the term “hybridity” has become extensively associated with the diasporic conditions to refer to the transcultural negotiations and fusions which constantly weave the fabric of diasporic cultural existence on multiple levels. The migrants’ attempt to adapt to the host country while retaining some of the bonds associated with the country of origin necessarily produces enmeshed cultural articulations in a variety of domains which continue to vary in accordance with considerations associated with race, class, gender, sexuality, generational identity, and much else. This intermingling of elements, drawn from multiple locations of culture, is what the term “hybridity” foregrounds.
