Ranajit Guha is an eminent scholar and modern historian. He began his teaching career in 1953 at Chandernagore Government College and moved to Calcutta Central College and later to Jadavpur University, Kolkata. He immigrated to the United Kingdom in 1959, where he took up a fellowship at the University of Manchester to finish his PhD. In 1962, he started his career as a Reader of History at the University of Sussex. In 1981, he joined the Australian National University and retired in 1988. He led the Subaltern Studies Group that attempted to rewrite and record “history from below.” He has edited ten volumes of Subaltern Studies: Writings on South Asia, which have deconstructed the elitist historiography.
