Amitav Ghosh was born on July 11, 1956, in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India, to Ansali Ghosh and Shailendra Chandra Ghosh. He was educated at the Doon School in Dehradun before earning a bachelor’s degree in history from St. Stephen’s College (University of Delhi) in 1976 and a master’s degree in sociology from the Delhi School of Economics in 1978. Ghosh continued his education at St. Edmund Hall at the University of Oxford. He also studied Arabic in Tunisia and conducted fieldwork in Egypt in the 1980s. In 1982, he was awarded a DPhil in social anthropology from the University of Oxford for his thesis, “Kinship in Relation to the Economic and Social Organization of an Egyptian Village.” Subsequently, Ghosh held several teaching positions at the University of Delhi, the American University in Cairo, Columbia University, and Harvard University before becoming a full-time writer. Ghosh’s works focus on historical events, cultural intersections, and the complexities of human relationships, leaving an indelible mark on contemporary literature.
