Bone is a remarkable organ of the human body that has the ability to undergo self-renewal. Also, this renewal may require a long time depending on the type of fracture. Bone tissue engineering products have the potential to accelerate the healing process of different bones. However, in order to design a bone tissue engineering device that can effectively function within the body, it is essential to possess comprehensive knowledge regarding the specific characteristics of bone tissue. Bone can be considered at the tissue and organ levels. Furthermore, it can be classified into other categories. In nanoscale, they are composed of structural proteins and polysaccharides. Osteogenesis, the process of bone formation, and the elongation of long bones begins during endochondral ossification, the second phase of long bone growth. The process continues from fetal stage to postnatal stages until skeletal maturity is reached. It begins when chondrocytes, which are experiencing proliferation within the template, change into a non-proliferative, hypertrophic state. Intramembranous bone regeneration occurs in many cases of skeletal healing. It is essential in several clinical scenarios. In bone tissue engineering, traditional methods aim to replicate the process of intramembranous ossification in order to create a matrix that closely resembles bone. This chapter presents a comprehensive overview of bone physiology, bone biology, osteogenesis, and bone development mechanisms.
