The carrier of sign-texts is merely a set of perceptible stimuli, and the meaning of the text is just in a state of “becoming.” As mentioned earlier in this book, the meaning needs to be implanted into the sign-text and interpreted. In semiotic practices, the rules that control how meaning is implanted and interpreted are called codes.
